On the cover: Following their expulsion from Nauvoo, Illinois, the Saints crossed the Mississippi River into Iowa and began the long trek that would take them to safety in the Valley of the Great Salt Lake. “The Iowa Trek of 1846,” by Stanley Kimball (page 36), tells of significant events that took place during this first phase of the exodus. On the cover is a painting by artist Dale Kilbourn, depicting Captain William Pitt’s brass band, which gave a concert in Farmington, Iowa, on March 3, 1846.
