In July 1831, the Prophet Joseph Smith and others arrived at Independence, where the Lord revealed that this was to be Zion, the center place, and that “a spot for the temple” was upon a lot (background) not far from the brick courthouse in the foreground. (See D&C 57:3.)

The Prophet Joseph Smith and five companions were imprisoned in Liberty Jail (Missouri) from November 1838 through April 1839, despite lack of evidence against them. In response to Joseph’s plea, “O God, where art thou?” the Prophet, as a prisoner, received the great comforting revelations known as Doctrine and Covenants sections 121 and 122. [D&C 121–122]
