“And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren …

“For, behold, we were binding in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.

“And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? … And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.” (Gen. 37:5–8.)

Angered, Joseph’s brothers sold him to some passing Ishmaelites who sold him as a slave in Egypt.

Later, when a famine struck the land of Canaan, the brothers went to Egypt to get food. There they found Joseph as a ruler and fulfilled the prophecies by paying obeisance to him.
