General Conference Music

This summary of conference music is provided for choir directors and other interested Church members. Hymns, 1985, refers to the new hymnbook recently published by the Church.

Saturday Morning, 5 April 1986 General Session

The Salt Lake Mormon Tabernacle Choir, directed by Donald H. Ripplinger, with organist Robert Cundick, sang “For All the Saints” by Vaughan Williams/How (Hymns, 1985, no. 82), “I Stand All Amazed” by Gabriel (Hymns, 1985, no. 193), “Know This, That Every Soul Is Free” by Miller/ Anon. (Hymns, 1985, no. 240), “Father, Cheer Our Souls Tonight” by Gibbons/Shipp (Hymns, 1985, no. 231; arr. Longhurst, Sonos), “Though Deepening Trials” by Careless/Snow (Hymns, 1985, no. 122), and “Where Can I Turn for Peace?” by Meredith/Thayne (Hymns, 1985, no. 129). The congregation sang “High on the Mountain Top” by Beesley/Johnson (Hymns, 1985, no. 5).

Saturday Afternoon, 5 April 1986 General Session

Combined institute choir from Utah Technical College, LDS Business College, University of Utah, Weber State College, and Utah State University, directed by Don B. Castleton, with organist Clay Christiansen, sang “Come, Follow Me” by McBurney/Nicholson (Hymns, 1985, no. 116; arr. Manookin, Sonos), “We Listen to a Prophet’s Voice” by Wolford/Leavitt (Hymns, 1985, no. 22), and “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” by Edwards/Medley (Hymns, 1985, no. 136; art. Cundick/Longhurst, Hymnal Plus II, Sonos). The congregation sang “I Need Thee Every Hour” by Lowry/Hawkes (Hymns, 1985, no. 98).

Saturday Evening, 5 April 1986 Priesthood Session

Choir of returned missionaries from Brigham Young University, directed by Stephen Bardsley, with organist John Longhurst, sang “God of Our Fathers, We Come unto Thee” by Beesley/Penrose (Hymns, 1985, no. 76), “Lord, I Would Follow Thee” by Dayley/McCloud (Hymns, 1985, no. 220; arr. Dayley, Sonos), and “Carry On” by Durham/ Fox (Hymns, 1985, no. 255; arr. Durham, Pioneer Music Press, Inc.). The congregation sang “Redeemer of Israel” by Lewis/Phelps (Hymns, 1985, no. 6).

Sunday Morning, 6 April 1986 General Session

The Tabernacle Choir, directed by Jerold Ottley, with organist John Longhurst, sang “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken” by Haydn/Newton (Hymns, 1985, no. 46), “Our Father, by Whose Name” by Edwards/Tucker (Hymns, 1985, no. 296), “An Angel from on High” by Tullidge/ Pratt (Hymns, 1985, no. 13), “Our Savior’s Love” by Gates/Hart (Hymns, 1985, no. 113; arr. Cundick, Sonos), “Press Forward, Saints” by Watkins/Gardner (Hymns, 1985, no. 81; art. Watkins, manuscript), and “Truth Eternal” by Schreiner/Pratt (Hymns, 1985, no. 4). The congregation sang “Praise to the Man” by Phelps (Hymns, 1985, no. 27).

Sunday Afternoon, 6 April 1986 General Session

The Tabernacle Choir directed by Jerold Ottley, with organist Robert Cundick, sang “Rejoice! A Glorious Sound Is Heard” by Asper/Robinson (Hymns, 1985, no. 257), “Oh Say, What Is Truth?” by Melling/Jaques (Hymns, 1985, no. 272; arr. Longhurst, Hymnal Plus l, Sonos), and “How Firm a Foundation” by Anon./Keen (Hymns, 1985, no. 85). Barbara Benson Walker sang “O Divine Redeemer” by Gounod (Larabee Publications), and the congregation sang “We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet” by Norton/Fowler (Hymns, 1985, no. 19).
