Peace, Not as the World Giveth, by Michael T. Malm. (Courtesy of the Museum of Church History and Art.) “Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. … “The wise [virgins] took oil in their vessels with their lamps” (Matthew 25:1, 4; see vv. 1–13).
Forsaking All, by Elspeth Young. Priscilla and her husband, Aquila, were exiled Jews living in Corinth, Greece. The Apostle Paul stayed with them during his second missionary journey. Like many other believers during New Testament times, Aquila and Priscilla forsook all for the gospel’s sake. Here Priscilla contemplates leaving Corinth for Ephesus. (See Acts 18:1–3, 18–19; Romans 16:1–3.)
That Good Part, by Elspeth Young. Siblings Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, of Bethany, were all devoted disciples of the Savior. On one occasion, “Martha received [Christ] into her house. “And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word” (Luke 10:38–39). Of this, Christ said, “Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:42).
