Blow, Wind, Blow!

Simple Kite

You will need: 8 1/2″ x 11″ piece of construction paper, tape, scissors, string, crepe paper.

  1. Fold a sheet of construction paper in half lengthwise. Open.

  2. Fold over top corners and tape in place (see illustration).

  3. Fold lengthwise as before and cut as shown in illustration.

  4. Make small holes in center along fold 1″ from top and 1″ from bottom.

  5. Thread a 14″ piece of string through top and bottom holes. Knot ends and tape in place on back side.

  6. Tie a guide string on front side of kite 4″ from top of kite.

  7. Tape on crepe paper tail.

Pinwheel

You will need: 8″ square piece of paper, wooden stick, small nail, and a small straight piece of macaroni.

  1. From each corner of paper cut in 4″ toward center (see illustration).

  2. Mark center of paper, and bend in every other tip toward center.

  3. Insert nail through the four tips. Place macaroni on nail and secure nail to stick.

Paper Sack Hand Kite

You will need: large paper grocery sack, ruler, string, streamers, and glue.

  1. Fold down top of grocery sack 1″. Poke one hole in each short side of sack 1/2″ from top.

  2. To form a handle tie a 4′ piece of string through each hole in sack.

  3. Glue streamers (see illustrations) around sack.

Cambodian Snake

You will need: Frame—two 1/4″ x 14″ bamboo stakes, one 1/4″ x 10 1/2″ bamboo stake, one 1/4″ x 36″ bamboo stake. (Bamboo stakes can be purchased at a garden supply store.) Cover—paper, cotton material, or plastic. Miscellaneous—string, ruler, scissors, knife, and glue.

Mark center of each stake and 1/4″ in from each end for binding. Split 36″ stake in half the long way and use only one half, marking 10 1/2″ to either side of its center. Cross 14″ stakes together at their centers and bind with string. For outside frame, lash the base (10 1/2″ strip) to ends of 36″ strip (see illustration). Lay bound crosspiece on top of outside frame, matching markings, and lash ends to frame (see illustration).

Using frame for pattern, cut out cover 2″ wider than frame. Cut several slits 1″ in form edge of cover for easy turning. Glue cover to frame. Cut tail 10″ wide at top and 3′ to 4′ long, tapering to a point. Glue to base of bamboo frame.

Make two crosswise grooves in center strip of kite, one 2 1/2″ from top and the other 3 3/4″ from bottom. Then tie a short piece of string between these grooves for attaching flying string.
