Sock Doll

You will need: ladies’ sock, scissors, ruler, stuffing, needle and thread, yarn, felt, glue, material, and ribbon.

Cut off 3″ band from top of sock and save. Cut sock through center from top to 2 1/2″ below heel for legs. Stuff foot of sock from toe to heel. If body seems too long, trim end of toe to size and stitch closed. Stitch legs, leaving feet open. Stuff legs firmly, and then stitch feet closed.

For arms, cut band in half, sew edges of pieces together, and leave ends open (see illustrations). Turn inside out, stuff, and stitch arms in place.

Cut fifteen strands of yarn 15″ long for hair. Tie yarn together at one end, divide into three parts, and braid. Tie end and add bows and both ends. Stitch braid around doll’s face, leaving ends loose for pigtails.

You can glue on bits of felt for facial features or paint face with fast-drying paint. Buttons make interesting eyes.

Make dress from two 5″ x 10″ pieces of material. Turn all raw edges 1/4″ and sew. Place material together, right sides facing each other. Sew sides together, leaving top open 2″ for armholes. Sew running stitch 1/2″ from top, and pull thread tight to gather material until top just fits around doll’s neck. Fasten thread securely. Sew ribbon over gathered seam, leaving ends long enough to tie a bow at shoulders.

Cut 5″ circle from material for hat. Sew running stitch 1″ from edge. Pull thread slightly to make ruffle for brim and fasten thread. Stitch hat to head and add ribbon band if you wish.
