Fruit Totem Pole

To make a fruit totem pole, you will need: honeydew melon, other fruit (such as apples, oranges, lemons, pears), 1/4″ (.6 cm) dowel, 2′ (60 cm) cord, construction paper, felt-tip markers, and toothpicks.

  1. Put honeydew melon on bottom of totem pole. Coil cord snugly around bottom of melon to keep it from rolling.

  2. Insert dowel into middle of melon.

  3. Push other fruit onto dowel.

  4. Use markers and paper faces, arms, and wings to decorate fruit. (Use toothpicks to attach paper to fruit.)

Soup-Can Ice Cream

Ice cream in a soup can is a perfect treat for one person on a hot day. You might want to invite your friends over for a do-it-yourself ice-cream-making party, or make some for family home evening. For one serving of homemade soup-can ice cream, you will need: clean soup can, medium-size plastic bowl, spoon, 2–3 cups ice cubes, 1/2 cup rock salt, 1/2 cup milk, 1 tablespoon sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla flavoring.

  1. Place can in bowl and surround it with ice cubes.

  2. Sprinkle rock salt on ice cubes only.

  3. Pour milk into can, then stir in sugar and vanilla. Continue stirring until mixture thickens into ice cream (about 15–20 minutes), then eat! Vanilla is the most popular ice-cream flavor. However, you can add diced fruit, crushed candy or cookie, nuts, coconut, butterscotch or chocolate chips, or chocolate syrup to the basic ingredients.
