For Little Friends

By Nancy Hauk

Shoot the Chutes Racecourse

You will need: a wall or other flat, vertical surface; tubes, boxes, tubs, cups, etc.; scissors; tape; and marbles.

  1. 1.

    Cut holes in the tubes, etc., where necessary to let a marble through.

  2. 2.

    Get permission from your parents, then tape the tubes, etc., to the wall in descending zigzags (see illustration for an example) so that a marble will roll from one to another all the way to the bottom.

  3. 3.

    Start two marbles down the course side by side and see which finishes first.

March Moods

Sometimes the wind is friendly,
As helpful as can be.
It gently dries my mother’s clothes,
And sails my kite for me.
Sometimes the wind is angry;
It slams the outside doors.
It breaks the treetop branches
While, lionlike, it roars.
Sometimes the wind is playful;
It blows away my hat
And makes me chase it down the street
Before I get it back.
Sometimes the wind is timid;
It tries to hide from me.
And since I cannot see it,
That’s as easy as can be!
