Family Night Pioneer Activities

Pioneer Log Cabin

To build a log cabin, you will need: white craft glue, 60–70 pretzel sticks, an empty and clean 1/2-pint (236 ml) milk or juice carton, scissors, black construction paper, and a 5″ x 3 3/4″ (13 cm x 9.5 cm) piece of brown construction paper.

  1. Glue the pretzels horizontally to all sides of the carton.

  2. Cut a door and three or four windows from the black paper, and glue them onto the cabin (see illustration).

  3. For the roof, fold the brown paper in half, unfold it, and glue the fold to the top of the carton, as illustrated.

Bread and Milk

Break whole wheat bread into a bowl of milk. Stir in bits of crumbled cheese and chopped green onion. For variety, stir in pieces of apple, raisins, or seedless grapes, instead. President Wilford Woodruff often fixed this dish.

Honey Taffy Pull

2 cups honey

1 cup sugar

1 cup cream

butter or margarine

  1. Combine the first three ingredients and cook slowly to a hard-ball stage. (If you don’t have a candy thermometer, drop about 1/8 teaspoon of the liquid into a half cup of cold water, then feel it with your fingers. If it forms a ball and is hard but still pliable, it’s done.)

  2. Pour onto a buttered platter.

  3. When barely cool enough to handle, butter your hands, divide the candy into portions each person can handle easily, then stretch each portion out as far as you can, double it back, and stretch it out again. Repeat the procedure until it’s too stiff to pull. Lay it stretched out on a clean counter to cool. Tip: Ask an adult to start stretching the candy so it won’t be so hot for you to handle.

  4. Break it into pieces by gently hitting it with the handle of a table knife.
