Memorizing Ideas

Memorizing scriptures can help us better learn and remember gospel teachings. The following ideas can help make memorizing the scriptures on the cards more enjoyable:

  1. Point to each word on the scripture card as you repeat it out loud. Repeat the procedure until you have memorized the scripture.

  2. Repeat the scripture several times. Cover up a few words at the beginning of it and repeat them; then cover up a few more words and repeat from the beginning all the covered-up words. Continue covering up the words and repeating them from the beginning until you can say the whole scripture without looking at it. Variation: Start covering up words from the end of the scripture.

  3. On a separate sheet of paper, write the first letter of each word in the scripture. Point to each letter as you repeat the corresponding word. Continue the procedure until you no longer need the letters to repeat the scripture.

  4. With a pencil, separate the scripture into phrases or groups of several words. Repeat each phrase or group of words a few times, beginning with the first phrase and continuing to the last, then beginning with the last phrase and working backward to the first, until you have memorized the whole scripture.

An Old Testament Time Line

The scriptures are a record kept by prophets called by Heavenly Father to teach and guide His children here on earth. As you read and memorize the scriptures referred to on this year’s poster, do it prayerfully. When you do, you will gain a better knowledge of the scriptures and their truthfulness. Each scripture and picture reinforces the poster’s monthly theme. To learn more about each monthly poster picture, read the story about it in the Friend. Then prepare the flannel board figures and use them to retell the story in family home evening or in a Primary talk. When the poster is completed at the end of the year, you will have memorized some important messages from God, and you will have an illustrated time line of events from the Old Testament.
