The Guide to the Friend can help you find stories or articles for preparing lessons or talks for church or for family home evening. The Primary theme for February is “The scriptures teach me about Heavenly Father and Jesus and how to return to Them.”

Family Home Evening Ideas

Look for the FHE symbol on the pages mentioned below.

  1. Read President Thomas S. Monson’s message “Do Your Duty” (pp. 2–3). What kinds of treasures might we find as we do our duties? (A clean conscience; satisfaction; more physical, spiritual, and mental strength.) Choose an object to represent “treasure” and hide it where someone might find it while doing chores this week (the laundry basket, dishwasher, etc.). Reward whomever finds it and let that person hide it for someone else to find.

  2. Read “Like Nephi” (pp. 4–6). What stories in the scriptures remind you of something that has happened to you? Fold a piece of paper in half. On one side, draw the scripture story. On the other half, draw the incident from your own life. Talk about each picture. How did the person in the scriptures behave? How did you follow his or her example or how could you in the future?

  3. Write down family members’ hobbies and talents on pieces of paper. Take turns drawing a paper. Everyone else counts slowly to five while the person tries to name one way the talent could be shared to help someone else. If the person cannot think of an answer, the person to the right has a chance to answer. When all the papers are drawn, read “Lightning Strikes” (pp. 10–12). Discuss how the Lord gives us talents not just for us to enjoy but also so we can help others.

  4. Complete the activity on pages 24 and 25. How can you show Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ that you love Them? How can you show appreciation for the four blessings shown and other blessings?

  5. Read “The Love Drawer” (pp. 28–29). Decorate shoe boxes to be your own love drawers and try to fill each other’s boxes throughout the week with kind notes and pictures.
