Getting Started (Android)

The Android version of the Doctrinal Mastery app can be found by searching for Doctrinal Mastery in the Play Store.

When you first open the app, select the seminary curriculum or book of scripture with the verses you would like to memorize: Old Testament (which includes the scriptures from the Pearl of Great Price), New Testament, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, or Articles of Faith.

To switch between books of scripture, tap the scripture mastery icon in the top left corner until the book of scripture menu appears.

For each book of scripture, the Doctrinal Mastery app has three main exercises to help you master the scriptures:

  • Memorize—a fun and easy exercise to help you memorize the scripture mastery passages.
  • Flashcards—flashcards to practice and reinforce what you have learned.
  • Quiz—a quiz to test your knowledge of what you have memorized.

Memorize

Start by selecting a scripture you want to memorize. Once you have selected the scripture, you can use the controls at the bottom of the screen to help you memorize it.

The scroll bar increases or decreases the difficulty level. The higher the difficulty level, the more words that are hidden.

The Aa button will toggle between hiding entire words and hiding all letters except the first letters of the hidden words.

Flashcards

Select the number of flashcards you want to work on. These can be sets of 5, 10, 15, 20, or 25 cards.

A flashcard will appear with a scripture reference. Tap the flashcard when you think you know the answer. Tap the check mark if you got it right or the x if you got it wrong. The app will give you the option at the end to retest yourself on the ones you missed.

In the top right corner of the app, you can select what kind of feedback you see after you guess the answer. HINT will show you a key phrase associated with the scripture. VERSE will show you the entire verse associated with the scripture reference.

Once you have completed your set of flashcards, you will be able to try again or return to the main menu.

Quiz

Select the number of questions you would like in your quiz. The quiz can have 5, 10, 15, 20, or 25 “cards.”

For each question there are four references. Select the reference that goes along with the key phrase or full scripture displayed. Scroll to the left to see the next question. You do not have to answer the questions in order.

For each quiz question you answer correctly, you add one point to your score. At the end of the quiz, you may save your score to view it later from the main menu under High Scores.
