Optimizing Satellite Network Video in Meetinghouses

Last Updated: 16 August 2018 at 07:43

The following settings do not apply to the Africa West and Southeast Africa areas.  Receiver settings in these areas have been optimized and require no additional changes.

Changes have been made on the Church’s satellite network to improve the video quality in meetinghouses.  Adjusting video settings on the satellite receiver(s) and projects/monitors at locations using the composite or RF outputs on the receiver may result in a better viewing experience.  Since video distribution equipment in meetinghouses varies from site-to-site, providing a single set of programming instructions to optimize picture quality is not possible.  Below is the recommended configuration for sites that have the standard Church display hardware.

Cisco D9865 Satellite Receiver Changes:

1) Press the “Menu” button on the front panel of receiver

2)  Press the down arrow button and highlight “Setup Menu” and press the “Select” button

3)    Press the down arrow button and highlight “Video Setup” and press the “Select” button

4) Make the following changes in the “Video Setup” menu:

               HD Video Output = Auto

               SD Video Output = NTSC

TV Channel = No change required - will be either 3 or 4

               TV Aspect Ratio = 4:3

               Aspect Ratio Convert = 16:9 L/B

               Closed Captioning = Auto

Note - Use the arrow buttons on front panel of the receiver to highlight a selection, then press the “OK” button to edit the setting displayed.  Using the left and right arrow keys change to the appropriate setting, then press the “OK” button again to save the change.  Repeat this procedure for each field that requires a change.

5) The Video Setup screen should now look like this.  If it does, press the “Menu” button on the front of the receiver until you completely exit the menus.

Monitor/Projector Setting Changes:

After making the changes on the satellite receiver, your monitor/projector will likely have a black border around the video.  To eliminate this, you will need to make a few adjustments on the monitor/projector.

Below is an example of how to make these changes on the current approved LG monitor and Epson Projector:

LG Monitor Changes:

The changes listed below need to be made if your monitor is connected using the composite inputs.  If it is connected to the HDMI input you should not need to make any changes to the monitor.

1) Press the “Ratio” button on the remote to bring up the menu shown below.  Use the arrow buttons to select “Zoom” and press the “Enter” button.

2) This may take you to the menu shown below, press the “Enter” button, then press the “Exit” button to exit the menu.

Note - Using the stretch feature if available on the monitor/projector is not recommended.  This may cause video distortion.

Epson 995WH Projector Changes:

The changes listed below need to be made if your projector is connected using the composite inputs to the projector.  If it is connected to the HDMI input, you should not need to make any changes to the projector.

1) Press the “Menu” button, then use the down arrow button and highlight “Signal” and press the “Enter” button on the remote.

2) Use the arrow button to highlight “Aspect“ and press the “Enter” button on the remote.
