Temple Work for Deceased Family Members Who Had a Withdrawal or Resignation of Church Membership

Policy and Principles

First Presidency approval is required to perform temple ordinances for deceased persons who, at the time of their death, had a withdrawal or resignation of Church membership. A letter should be written to the Office of the First Presidency Office of the First Presidency after one year has passed since the person’s death. The letter should be mailed to the address shown below. No form is required. The bishop or stake president may assist with this request as needed.

  • A family member should write a letter to the Office of the First Presidency explaining the request, even if the person only suspects that the deceased relative may have had a withdrawal or resignation of Church membership.
  • The letter should include the deceased member’s full name, birth date, death date, and the family member’s relationship to the deceased member.
  • The family member will be contacted by the Temple Department.
