Step by Step

Place or Remove a Move Restriction

Policy and Principles

If a member moves while Church membership restrictions or another serious concern is pending, the bishop, or the ward clerk with the bishop’s authorization, may place a move restriction on the membership record. A move restriction may also be placed in cases of welfare abuse.

A record that has a move restriction will not be moved to a new unit until the current bishop of the unit that placed the restriction authorizes it to be removed.

Previously, the bishop or an authorized clerk was required to contact Church headquarters or the assigned administrative office to ask that a move restriction be placed or removed. However, this can now be done online.

If a unit requests the membership record of a member who has a move restriction, the contact information of the current bishop of the unit that placed the restriction will be provided to the requesting unit.

Procedures

  1. Click here to go to the Member List.
  2. Click on the name of the member for whom you want to place or remove a move restriction, and then click the View Member Profile button to display his or her individual information.
  3. Click the Actions button under the membership record number.
  4. Check or uncheck the Move Restriction box (to either place or remove a move restriction). (A clerk must receive authorization from the bishop to do this.)

Note: Bishops may continue to contact the Global Service Department (GSD) for assistance in placing or removing a move restriction. Also, on occasion a move restriction may be placed on a member’s record by Church headquarters for administrative purposes. Under these circumstances, bishops will not be able to remove the move restriction online and will be prompted to contact the GSD for assistance. For GSD support contact information, click here.
