King Benjamin gave this talk from a tower.

It’s a famous message about service!

Benjamin was a great king—partly because he didn’t act the way some greedy kings act. In Mosiah 2, we learn that he:

  • Didn’t try to get rich off of the people (see v. 12).
  • Did his own work to earn a living (see v. 14).
  • Taught his people righteous things (see v. 13) and set a good example.

(Benjamin’s awesomeness as a king will be even more apparent later in the book of Mosiah, when we read about his exact opposite: King Noah!)

King Benjamin summarized his philosophy this way: “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of your God” (Mosiah 2:17).

About 150 years later, the Savior Himself would make the same point: “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40).

God wants us to serve Him. But it’s not for selfish reasons. It’s because He knows the system elevates everyone. We serve God by serving other people. We love God by loving one another.

So... how can you help God today?
