On the cover: Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve meets in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) with members of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir during their 1991 tour. Elder Nelson writes of the remarkable events that have occurred in the Church in middle and eastern Europe over the last five years. See “Drama on the European Stage,” page 8. Photography by Craig Dimond.

Back cover: “Upon authorization by the First Presidency, I was privileged to dedicate the land of Hungary on Mt. Gellért in Budapest,” reports Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. In a special article, Elder Nelson reviews the impact that recent historic events in middle and eastern Europe have had on the Church. See “Drama on the European Stage,” page 8.

Inside back cover: “Alma and Amulek,” by Gary L. Kapp. Wrongfully imprisoned, Alma and Amulek were stripped, bound, and reviled by their persecutors. “After they had thus suffered for many days,” the Lord answered Alma’s prayer for deliverance. Their bonds were broken, “and the earth shook mightily, and the walls of the prison were rent in twain, so that they fell to the earth; and the chief judge, and [those] who smote upon Alma and Amulek, were slain by the fall thereof. And Alma and Amulek … were not hurt.” (See Alma 14:14–29.)
