The Church in Hungary

In 1887 Hungarian Mischa Markow was converted near Constantinople (Istanbul), Turkey. In 1899 he served as a missionary in his native land, but he was arrested and banished from Hungary because of his preaching. He tried to share the gospel in neighboring countries, but after having difficulties there, Elder Markow and his companion preached in Temesvár, Hungary, until the government forced them to leave. The day before they left, they baptized and confirmed 12 people and appointed leaders for a congregation of 31 members.

Prior to World War I, a total of 106 people joined the Church in Hungary. Political restrictions then limited missionary work until the 1980s.

In June 1988 Hungary gave the Church legal recognition. One year later President Thomas S. Monson dedicated the country’s first meetinghouse. The Hungary Budapest Mission was created in June 1990.

From Bondi Rescue to Baguio Rescue

Blake McKeown, popularly known as the “rookie” lifeguard in the Australian television show Bondi Rescue, left his post on the beach last May to perform another kind of rescue. He accepted a mission call to serve in Baguio, Philippines. He shared this news and his feelings with colleagues and audiences on the show.

“When I found out I’d be going to the Philippines, I was stoked,” he said. “I will miss the beach for sure, but going on a mission is important to me. It is something I have been working toward all my life.”

Blake says, “There’s nothing I’d rather have done for the past two years than work on the beach—it’s the best job in the world—but for the next two years there’s nothing better I want to do than serve a mission. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not a religion you can just say you’re part of; it’s a religion you have to live. It’s my life. I would be a very, very different person if it wasn’t for the Church.”

My Favorite Scripture

“For my soul delighteth in the song of the heart; yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me, and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads” (D&C 25:12).

This scripture teaches us that music is important to Heavenly Father. It is wonderful that music can be such a beautiful thing and can play a role in the gospel.
