Looking Out into October

    Driving rain

    washes against my window

as more low clouds move past

on their way to the coast.

    Across the street

    a dripping chestnut sheds

its fiery leaves to the ground,

    now one,

    then three.

    As the wind swoops down

    the fading grass cowers

    beneath the hedges,

    beside the driveway.

    Grey, rust, and green.
