Special Issue:
The Scriptures—Written for You

“Search the scriptures; for … they are they which testify of me” (John 5:39).

You hear the advice all the time: Study the scriptures. But why? What’s so important about words written long ago in language that sometimes seems difficult to decipher?

There are lots of answers. First of all, studying the scriptures is a commandment. The Book of Mormon in particular was prepared to help us in our day. It is the foundation document of the restored gospel, another testament of Christ, and the key to understanding the Old and New Testaments, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price.

And as with any commandment, obedience in searching the scriptures will bring you blessings.

Scripture study can help you gain a testimony, bring you closer to Heavenly Father, teach you about the Savior and the Atonement, and help you feel the Spirit. It can make earthly problems seem less urgent and bring you hope and comfort. It can make ancient prophets and people real to you. It can strengthen you and make it easier to be righteous, give you direction in your life, help you to know the gospel plan, and prepare you to be a missionary. It can let you know you are loved. Scripture study can do this and more, much more.

What can the scriptures do to help you right now? They are precious words to guide you through this life and onward in your eternal journey. In them you can hear the voice of the Lord. They testify of him.
