Idea List:

Showing Gratitude

November is a good time to think about all the things you’re grateful for. Chances are, parents and grandparents are right up there on your list. Here are some ways to let them know just how much you appreciate them:

  • Put together a “Parent Appreciation Day.” You could do it alone, with your brothers or sisters, or as a Mutual activity. Do things all day to make your parents feel appreciated.

  • If your grandparents live close by, visit them frequently. If they don’t, write or call often. Grandparents are always eager to hear from their grandchildren.

  • Give sincere compliments, like “Hey, Grandpa, fishing with you was great,” or “Thanks, Mom, that dinner was awesome.”

  • Don’t be afraid to show them your affection. Just because you’re older now doesn’t mean you can’t hug or kiss them anymore.

  • Show respect when addressing them. Avoid insults, sarcasm, and demeaning comments.

  • Write them a thank-you note, telling them all the reasons you’re thankful for them.

  • Surprise them with breakfast in bed.

  • Do your chores before being asked or reminded. Parents like that a lot, and when you do things without them having to nag, their gratitude for you will increase!

  • Offer to do something they normally do, like making a meal or running an errand.

  • When you’re at your grandparents’ home, offer to help them with jobs around the house that might be difficult for them.
