Of All Things

Leadership Tip

Is there someone you admire? Laurels in Salt Lake City’s Yalecrest First Ward brainstormed these ideas on how to be a good role model:

  • Always be willing to help.

  • You have the light of Christ. Let it shine!

  • Don’t gossip.

  • Show kindness to those who need help, but be humble when you serve.

  • Genuinely love people.

  • Always look for the good in others.

  • Give compliments sincerely.

One Stitch at a Time

Making a quilt does not seem like a conventional way to prepare for a temple; but that’s exactly what Sarah Cutler was asked to do to help unify the young women of the Albuquerque New Mexico East Stake, when the Albuquerque New Mexico Temple was being built. Sarah designed the quilt top, incorporating a part of the Young Women theme, and had all the young women of the stake sign its large border. The quilt was completed by March 5, when the temple was dedicated.

“I’ve thought about how much making this quilt is like preparing to make and keep sacred covenants in the temple,” Sarah says. “The first thing we need is a desire to go to the temple. … On the quilt of our preparation for the temple, we just have to keep going stitch by stitch by tiny stitch.”

Write Away! My Scripture Hero

If Captain Moroni makes you want to fight for liberty and truth, or the Apostle Paul inspires you to do missionary work, now is the time to tell other New Era readers about your scripture hero. Tell us why your hero is important to you in 100 words or less, and send your submission and a snapshot of yourself to the New Era at 50 East North Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah 84150. Here’s an example of what we’re looking for:

“One of my Book of Mormon heroes is Gideon. He is first mentioned in Mosiah 19 as a strong man who sought to slay the evil king Noah, but spared his life. When Noah’s priests abducted the daughters of the Lamanites, Gideon sent men after them so their people would be spared from the Lamanites. He also came up with a plan to help their people escape by giving the Lamanite guards wine and then escaping when they were drunk. He later became a teacher in the church and, as an old man, was slain by Nehor for defending the church. He was not a prophet or a famous missionary, but he was a brave servant of the Lord.”—Elder Joel Hiller, 20, Korea Seoul West Mission

See calls for entries for “My Favorite Hymn” and “Scripture Power” in this year’s July and August issues.

Online Rules

The Internet is both useful and fun, but surfing the Internet can be more dangerous than riding a real-world surfboard. Here are some I-surfing tips to help you avoid virtual sharks:

  • Never give out personal information such as an address, telephone number, the name and location of your school, or a picture, unless you have parental permission first.

  • If you come across any sites that make you uncomfortable, leave immediately, and be sure to let your parents know.

  • Getting together with someone you meet online is very risky. If your parents consent, meet your cyber-friend in a public place and take an adult with you.

  • Don’t respond to any messages that are demeaning or make you uncomfortable in any way. Tell your parents if an inappropriate message needs to be reported to your Internet service provider.

  • Shopping on the Internet can be tempting, but you should check with your parents before ordering anything.

  • Be nice. The Golden Rule applies in the e-world too.

Church Magazine Database

Now you can have some extra help preparing that sacrament meeting talk. A searchable database of the Church magazines from 1971 to 1999 is now available on CD ROM at Church distribution centers. The database will be of great help in personal and family gospel study. Besides being accessible on CD ROM, the magazine database, in addition to the standard works, can be accessed on the Church’s Web site at www.lds.org.

Have No Fear!

“Even though young life is always filled with uncertainties, young people, do not fear the future! …

“Keep the Word of Wisdom. Seek worthy companions. Attend church faithfully. Never fail daily to seek for help through prayer. And I promise you that the way will be easier and you shall have a composure of mind and a confident attitude toward life and the future. You shall be warned of dangers and shall be guided through the whisperings of the Holy Spirit.

“I bear witness that this revelation [the Word of Wisdom] is a powerful protection to all members of the Church, particularly to you, the youth of the Church, as you face a life full of so many troubles and danger and uncertainties. But, young members of the Church, have faith. The Lord will be with you; you will be guided” (Boyd K. Packer, Ensign, May 1996, 19).
