Let Spirit Guide Use of Handbooks, Leaders Say at Training

“Only by the Spirit will you know how to apply what you read in the handbook,” said President Henry B. Eyring during worldwide leadership training on February 12, 2011. The meeting, a follow-up to the November 2010 worldwide leadership training, introduced the Leadership Training Library and gave further instruction on using the new Church handbooks.

President Eyring was accompanied by Elders Russell M. Nelson, Dallin H. Oaks, Richard G. Scott, Robert D. Hales, Jeffrey R. Holland, David A. Bednar, Quentin L. Cook, D. Todd Christofferson, and Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Also participating were Elders Craig C. Christensen, Bruce D. Porter, and W. Craig Zwick of the Seventy, and the general presidents of the auxiliaries.

The leaders participated in panel discussions that reviewed the handbook’s emphasis on application of principles such as preparing spiritually, participating in councils, and ministering to others. They also looked at particular characteristics of the new handbooks, including the doctrinal foundation, principles of adaptation, focus on the work of salvation, and inclusion of women in councils. At the conclusion of the training, Elder Nelson shared the Brethren’s hopes regarding the handbooks’ role in administration of the Church.
