Oath

As used in the scriptures, usually a sacred covenant or promise. However, wicked persons, including Satan and his angels, also make oaths to accomplish their evil purposes. In Old Testament times, oaths were acceptable; however, Jesus Christ taught that people should not swear in the name of God or his creations (Matt. 5:33–37).

  • I will perform the oath which I swear unto Abraham:Gen. 26:3;
  • If a man swears an oath to bind his soul, he shall not break it:Num. 30:2;
  • They entered into an oath to walk in God’s law:Neh. 10:29;
  • Thou shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:Matt. 5:33; ( Eccl. 5:1–2; 3 Ne. 12:33; )
  • God swears with an oath that the faithful shall be saved:Heb. 6:13–18;
  • When Zoram made an oath, our fears did cease:1 Ne. 4:37;
  • The people of Ammon took an oath that they would never shed blood:Alma 53:11;
  • The wicked Nephites made secret oaths and covenants with Satan:Hel. 6:21–30;
  • Men gain eternal life through the oath and covenant of the priesthood:D&C 84:33–42;
  • All covenants, contracts, bonds, obligations, and oaths not sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise end when men die:D&C 132:7;
