Teach by the Spirit

Principles and Methods of Teaching

What can I do to have the Spirit of the Lord with me as I teach?

A teacher of the gospel should humbly recognize that the Holy Ghost is the true teacher. You can become an instrument through whom the Holy Ghost can teach, testify, comfort, and inspire. The Holy Ghost will guide you in your teaching as you properly prepare yourself.

To teach by the Spirit, it is important that you have a testimony of what you are teaching. During the lesson, bear that testimony to those you are teaching, as guided by the Holy Ghost.

You can invite the Spirit to be with you during each lesson. Have class members offer prayers, use the scriptures during the lessons, share experiences with living gospel principles, sing hymns, and express their testimonies. Take advantage of every opportunity to help others recognize when they feel the Spirit.

Scriptures to study

John 14:26; 2 Nephi 32:5; Moroni 10:5; Doctrine and Covenants 8:2–3; 42:12–14; 50:13–22

Things you can do

  • Study the scriptures in the lesson, and ponder how they apply to your own life.
  • Pray to know what gospel principles to emphasize, since you may not have time to teach the entire lesson.
  • Share your experiences and testimony related to the principles being taught, and invite class members to share their experiences and testimonies.
