New Video Resources Enhance Study of the Gospel Teaching and Learning Handbook

Gospel Teaching and Learning handbook

New videos that have been added to the online version of Gospel Teaching and Learning: A Handbook for Teachers and Leaders in Seminaries and Institutes of Religion (2012) will enhance teachers’ study experience and help them improve their teaching skills.

The new video resources have been inserted directly into the online version of Gospel Teaching and Learning. Many of the videos have been placed where they fit naturally with the principles of the handbook, providing a unified learning experience by ensuring that teachers don’t have to leave the handbook to watch a related video. (The videos are also available in the Media Library on LDS.org under the category Teacher Training—Gospel Teaching and Learning Handbook Video Resources.)

The videos include (1) messages from Church leaders that support principles taught in the handbook, (2) information and training from seminary and institute leaders to guide and enhance study opportunities, and (3) examples from actual teachers that illustrate practices related to the principles of effective teaching.

Clint Udy of Seminaries and Institutes of Religion Training Services explained that these online video resources are “aligned with our system priority to harmonize our efforts with prophetic priorities and those appointed to lead us.” Additional videos will be added as they become available to keep Gospel Teaching and Learning up to date with key messages from leaders.

Not only can teachers watch the videos as part of their personal study, but coordinators and administrators can also use the videos as part of inservice meetings and other teacher training opportunities. Area inservice meetings, stake teacher meetings with coordinators, and discussions between teachers may all be enhanced through the use of these videos.

Brother Udy further emphasized that the overall intent of this new resource is to “help the gospel sink deep into the hearts of teachers and students. We want to elevate teaching. By seeing these videos, teachers can be inspired by watching prophets, apostles, and other leaders explain the principles of effective teaching, and then teachers can act on what they feel.”
