Seek Reliable Sources for Truth
During October, take time to discuss the meaning and importance of seeking truth “by study and also by faith” (D&C 88:118). Help students understand that in a world bombarded with information, the Holy Ghost can help them identify reliable sources of truth.
In a recent talk, Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles encouraged teachers to help students identify trusted sources of truth. He recommended relying on sources like LDS.org, Gospel Topics Essays, The Joseph Smith Papers, mormonnewsroom.org, and the work of faithful LDS scholars. He further counseled: “You must . . . be doing those things in your personal life that allow the Holy Spirit to work within you. Such things include sincere daily prayer, faithful fasting, regular study and pondering of the scriptures and the words of the living prophets, making the Sabbath day a delight, partaking of the sacrament with humility and always remembering the Savior, worshiping in the temple as often as possible, and, finally, reaching out to the needy, poor, and lonely—both those close by and across the world” (“The Opportunities and Responsibilities of CES Teachers in the 21st Century” [address to Church Educational System religious educators, Feb. 26, 2016]). By diligently seeking truth from trusted sources and following these guidelines, you and your students can know the truth of all things through the power of the Holy Ghost (see Moroni 10:5).
Invite Students to Share
Invite students to share on social media how they can learn to identify and use good sources of information to learn truth from the Holy Ghost. You and your students can share insights about finding truth by answering the following questions on social media:
What is one truth I have discovered by consulting trusted sources and listening to the Spirit?
How does righteousness impact my ability to discern truth?
Invite students to include #LDSInstitute and #MyJourney in their posts. Shareable images are available on the LDS Institutes of Religion Facebook page and below.
