Why Enroll in Seminary?

Man studying the scriptures

President Thomas S. Monson said, “Young people, I ask you to participate in seminary. Study your scriptures daily. Listen to your teachers carefully. Apply what you learn prayerfully” (Aug. 12, 2011). Students preparing to enter seminary may want to consider applying these ideas to have a great seminary experience.

Think about why you will be attending seminary. Consider why your parents, priesthood leaders, and the prophet strongly encourage you to attend seminary, and consider the promised blessings that come along with attending. President Monson promised, “Seminary will help you to understand and rely on the teachings and Atonement of Jesus Christ. You will feel the Spirit of the Lord as you learn to love the scriptures” (Aug. 12, 2011).

Begin a habit of daily scripture study before you start seminary. President Howard W. Hunter said, “When we follow the counsel of our leaders to read and study the scriptures, benefits and blessings of many kinds come to us. This is the most profitable of all study in which we could engage” (“Reading the Scriptures,” Ensign, Nov. 1979, 64).

If you are already attending seminary, you may want to consider trying these ideas if you have not already.

Try not to let homework, sports teams, or school clubs push seminary aside. Do your best to make time for seminary no matter what your other activities are. President Spencer W. Kimball said, “Of all treasures of knowledge, the most vital is the knowledge of God” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1968, 129).

Make an effort to participate in seminary by studying the scriptures regularly and completing the book of scripture assigned each year. Taking the learning assessment can be a great way to see what you know and to learn the key doctrines and principles as you study with your class. Remember President Monson’s encouragement to participate, study, and apply what you learn.

Finally, have fun! Invite your friends to attend with you, and get to know your teacher and the kids in your class. President Gordon B. Hinckley said, “We do not hesitate to promise that your knowledge of the gospel will be increased, your faith will be strengthened, and you will develop wonderful associations and friendships” (“The Miracle Made Possible by Faith,” Ensign, May 1984, 47).
