On the cover: Reconstructed cabin on the Jonathan Browning property, Nauvoo, Illinois. Browning was a gunsmith who moved to Nauvoo in 1843. He may well have built or moved into the cabin that is shown in the foreground of the picture; he later built the brick home that rises up behind the cabin. Photography by Jed A. Clark.
Inside front cover: In the mid to late 1840s, a sister named Ann Eckford cross-stitched on petitpoint backing this sampler of the Nauvoo Temple. It was patterned after the Twigg memorial plate, which depicted the Nauvoo Temple with the angel flying horizontally, in weathervane style. The actual temple, which was never totally completed, had no angel. The names around the border, beginning with President Brigham Young, are those of the members of the Council of the Twelve who were serving at that time. The sampler is 12″ x 16″ and is silk on linen. It is on permanent loan to the Church Historical Department, Arts and Sites Division.
