In the Spotlight

  • Michelle Kay Waite, Peru Ward, Fort Wayne Indiana Stake, was named 1993 National Mother of Young Children in the fifty-eighth annual national convention of American Mothers held in Raleigh, North Carolina, in April 1993.

  • Five Latter-day Saint mothers represented their states in the Mother of Young Children category: Lanae Lamoreaux Tryon, Lehi Second Ward, Mesa Arizona Lehi Stake; Juliann Bentley Marchant, Sparks Sixth Ward, Sparks Nevada Stake; Debra Jean Nylund May, Hazeldale Ward, Cedar Mill Oregon Stake; Jill McDonald Humpherys, Carlisle Ward, Harrisburg Pennsylvania Stake; and Deborah Bennett Mohlman, Mueller Park Second Ward, Bountiful Utah Mueller Park Stake.

  • Three Latter-day Saint mothers represented their states as Mother of the Year delegates: Renee Pyott Carlson, Potomac South Ward, Washington D.C. Stake; Ethelyn Hughes Peterson, Francisco Park Ward, Las Vegas Nevada Paradise Stake; and Betty Butler Larsen, River Heights Second Ward, Providence Utah Stake.

  • More than eight hundred of the stained glass windows in Euro Disneyland, including two 26-foot domes with more than five thousand pieces of individually cut glass each, were designed by Mark Walton, a member of the Los Gatos Ward, Saratoga California Stake.

  • Currently a student at UCLA on a track scholarship, Erin Diane Blunt was an All-American in track and field in both 1991 and 1992 while she attended San Pasqual (California) High School. She is a member of the UCLA Ward, Los Angeles California Stake.

  • Dr. Cleeretta Henderson Smiley, a resident of the greater Washington, D.C., area who serves as a Church public affairs representative, was conferred an honorary doctor of divinity degree in 1988 by the Universal Orthodox College of Iperu Remo, Nigeria, for her religious work. Dr. Smiley enrolled in 1991 as an annual charter member of the World Foundation of Successful Women, and she became a member of the Women’s Federation for World Peace in October 1992. Sister Smiley is a member of the Washington D.C. Second Ward, Washington D.C. Stake.

  • Russ Miller, riding a filly named Dox Miss N Reno, won the 1992 National Cutting Horse Association’s World Championship Futurity—the organization’s most prestigious event. Brother Miller is a member of the Wilford First Ward, St. Anthony Idaho Stake.
