President Gordon B. Hinckley greets former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher during an 8 March First Presidency luncheon at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. While visiting Utah, Lady Thatcher and her husband, Sir Denis Thatcher, toured Temple Square and attended a weekly broadcast of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The choir’s program consisted entirely of songs written by British composers. In addition, Lady Thatcher received an honorary doctor of public service degree from Brigham Young University during a special convocation presided over by President Hinckley. Lady Thatcher, who served as British Prime Minister from 1979 through 1990, was in Utah for the state’s UK-Utah Festival celebrating the historic links between the two geographic locations.
