Saul of Tarsus
(A Flannelboard Story)
After the death of Jesus Christ, the members of His church suffered many persecutions. A well-educated man by the name of Saul was a leader in this work. He was greatly feared by the Christians, for he hunted them down from village to village and from house to house.
One day as Saul was on his way to Damascus, there suddenly shined round about him a light from heaven.
Blinded by the great light, Saul fell to the earth. Then he heard a voice saying, “Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?”
“Who art thou?” Saul asked.
“I am Jesus whom thou persecutest,” replied the voice.
Trembling with astonishment, Saul said, “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?”
The Lord said unto him, “Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.”
Since Saul could not see, the men who were with him led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. He stayed there for three days, fasting, praying, and thinking about what he should do.
A certain follower of Christ named Ananias lived in Damascus. In a vision the Lord said to him, “Ananias, arise and go and inquire for one called Saul of Tarsus. He prayeth and hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming and laying his hands on him, that he might receive his sight.”
Then Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard about this man and how evil he is.”
But the Lord said unto him, “Go thy way, for he is a chosen vessel unto me. I will show him how many things he must suffer for my name’s sake.”
Ananias went to see Saul. He laid his hands on him and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, who appeared unto thee, hath sent me that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.”
At once Saul received his sight back. So he arose and was baptized.
Saul stayed a few days with the disciples at Damascus. Then he went to the synagogues and preached the gospel of Christ.
All who heard him were amazed, and said, “Is not this the man who destroyed them who called on the name of Jesus?”
But Saul grew even stronger in his knowledge and testimony and went about teaching that Jesus is truly the Son of God.
