Valentine Activities

Valentine Necklace

You will need: newspaper, aluminum foil, cookie sheet, 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt, 1/3 cup water, large bowl, table knife, pencil, acrylic paints, paintbrush, 1/8″ wide ribbon, and scissors.

  1. Place newspaper on worktable. Cover top of cookie sheet with aluminum foil.

  2. Mix flour, salt, and water in bowl with hands until it feels like clay. Add more flour or water if needed. Set oven at 275º.

  3. Place a small lump of clay on cookie sheet, flatten with palm (1/4″ thick), then cut desired shape (star, heart, moon, flower, bird, etc.) with knife or cookie cutter. Remove excess clay. Poke hole near top of shape with pencil. Be sure to leave space between each shape.

  4. Bake until shapes are hard and dry (about 1 hour).

  5. Let cool on cookie sheet and then paint.

  6. When completely dry, thread desired length of ribbon through hole and tie ends together for necklace.

Flying Valentine

Make a paper airplane from white paper. Decorate with small hearts and print “Let’s fly, my Valentine!” on wings (see illustration).

Puzzle Valentine

You will need: red construction paper, scissors, small white envelope, and pen.

  1. Cut a large heart from construction paper.

  2. Glue front of envelope to middle of heart.

  3. Cut smaller heart, write your name on it, and then cut into puzzle pieces.

  4. Slip “broken heart” into envelope. Seal with small heart and print “Please, won’t you be my valentine and mend this broken heart of mine?” on envelope.
