Elder LeGrand Richards, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, died January 11, 1983. He served as a General Authority of the Church longer than any present General Authority.

Born in Farmington, Utah, he was one of fifteen children. After growing up on a farm in Tooele, Utah, he served a mission in the Netherlands. Subsequently he was called on another mission to the Eastern States. Later he served as a mission president (twice), a bishop (three times), and a stake president. In 1938 he was named a General Authority and Presiding Bishop of the Church. He was called to be a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1952.

Ever a missionary, Elder Richards’s buoyant spirit and genuine concern for others endeared him to people wherever he traveled. His boundless knowledge of the gospel, combined with his abiding faith and rare sense of humor, made him a delightful and favorite speaker. A testament of the truthfulness of the gospel contained in this book A Marvelous Work and a Wonder continues to inspire all those who read its vibrant message.

Elder Richards was a friend to all mankind, and he will be remembered for his untiring and righteous labor in the Lord’s service.
