Valentine Cookies

To make personalized valentine cookies to give to your friends and family, you will need: frosted cookies, food coloring, water, paper towels, paintbrush, five small dishes.

Basic Cookie Recipe

1/2 cup butter or margarine

3/4 cup sugar

1 egg

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

1 1/2 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

  1. Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla, then beat hard.

  2. Sift flour with baking powder and salt. Stir into butter mixture.

  3. Chill dough one hour or more.

  4. Take 1/4 of dough at a time, and roll it out on floured cloth or board. Cut out cookies, and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Roll scraps together for more cookies. Repeat with remaining dough.

  5. Bake cookies at 350° F (175° C) for 6 to 8 minutes or until lightly brown. Cool slightly, then remove from cookie sheet.

Frosting

1 cup powdered sugar

2 tablespoons milk

1/4 teaspoon vanilla

1 tablespoon butter

  1. Mix all ingredients together until smooth.

  2. Spread over slightly warm cookies. Make certain that entire top of each cookie is covered.

Painting Cookies

Put a few drops of four different food coloring into separate dishes. Add an equal amount of water to each color. Put plain water into remaining dish to rinse paintbrush in. Place paper towel under each cookie before you paint designs, sayings, or names on it. Copy designs shown here, or create your own.
