Winter Pocket Checkers

  1. This is a game for two players. In addition to the playing pieces, you will need an envelope and a checkerboard.

  2. Cut the section of playing pieces from the magazine and glue it onto heavier paper. Then cut out each of the pieces and put them into an envelope.

Rules

  1. To play this game, each player lines up his/her playing pieces on opposite sides of the board, using only the black squares. The TENS are placed on the back row, the FIVES on the next row, and the ONES on the third row (see diagram).

  2. Players take turns moving their pieces straight ahead or diagonally forward one space at a time. You may not move backward or sideways.

  3. Other players’ pieces can be taken from the board by jumping over them diagonally, as in checkers. However, a piece may only jump over another piece of equal or less value. For example, ONES can jump over ONES, but not over FIVES or TENS. On the other hand, a TEN can jump over any other playing piece and remove it from the board.

  4. The game ends when either player cannot move. Each player then adds the numbers on the pieces he or she has taken from the board. The person with the highest number wins.
