2018 Light the World in AWA

It was all joy and bliss when missionaries and some members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints went out in their numbers to participate in the Light the World launch on Saturday, December 1, 2018, in Accra.

The event, which took place at the Accra Rehabilitation Center, a Government institution that provides skills training for persons with disabilities, brought together corporate workers, government representatives, traditional leaders, civil service workers, hawkers, head porters, and individuals from the various Disability Unions.

Participants were uplifted with choral performances by the Bountiful Tabernacle and Joyful Souls Choral groups. Missionaries from the Ghana Accra West and Ghana Accra Missions also made their presence felt when they performed a play exhibiting the importance of service, which is the main focus of the Light the World campaign.

The theme of the event, “Give as He Gave,” invites people to follow the example of the Savior Jesus Christ, who is “the light of the world” (John 8:12).

Speaking at the event, His Majesty Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI, Guest of Honor for the occasion, explained that every individual has a role to play in making our society a better place.

He therefore called on all and sundry to actively participate in the campaign by rendering an act of service.

Rex Allen, President of the Accra Ghana Missionary Training Center, in his address opined that the Light the World campaign seeks to encourage people to give and support others since that is the rationale behind the celebration of Christmas.

Mr. Darlington Churchill, Managing Director of the Accra Rehabilitation Center, commended the Church for its support towards the refurbishment of the Visual Arts department. “This event has come with improvement in our infrastructure as the various workshops will be renovated and equipped. One workshop has been done and we salute the Church for this gesture.”

He further called on Church leaders in the Africa West Area to adopt the Center and help provide regular support to the trainees.

As part of activities at the launch, food was distributed to over 400 individuals who participated in the event.

The Accra Rehabilitation Center was established in 1962. The Center has over the years trained over 2,000 persons with disabilities with employable skills.
