A Wicked World Destroyed

After several chapters that spoke of the destruction of different nations (see Isaiah 13–23), Isaiah 24 speaks of a more general destruction on all the earth. Isaiah 24 especially applies to the Israelites and what would happen to them because of their wickedness, but it also applies to the last days before the Second Coming.

Although Isaiah 24 seems very discouraging because it speaks so much about destruction, it also contains a small message of hope concerning the righteous who are spared. This hopeful message is even stronger in the next few chapters.

Studying the Scriptures

Do activities A and B as you study Isaiah 24.

  1. Learn from Related Scriptures

    1. Read Doctrine and Covenants 5:19 and 84:96–98 and write about how and why the Lord will do what He said He would do in Isaiah 24:1.

    2. Read Doctrine and Covenants 1:17, 35–36; 45:31–35; and 97:22–28 and explain how a person can be saved in the midst of the destructions prophesied in Isaiah 24:1–12, 19–23.

    3. List the ways the Lord said the people of the earth sinned in Isaiah 24:5. Compare what He said in Isaiah to what He said in Doctrine and Covenants 1:15–16, and tell what you think Isaiah 24:5 means.

  2. Part of the Plan of Salvation

    1. According to Isaiah 24:21–22, what will happen to those destroyed at the time the prophecies in this chapter come to pass?

    2. According to Doctrine and Covenants 138:29–35, how will these people be “visited”?
