My Path to Self-Reliance

Stakes or wards hold regular My Path to Self-Reliance devotionals. These devotionals start members on the path to self-reliance by helping them understand the importance of self-reliance, assess their current level of self-reliance, determine the skills and income needed to become temporally self-reliant, and select the self-reliance group that will help them reach that goal. The My Path to Self-Reliance workbook facilitates this process. My Path to Self-Reliance can also be used individually, with a priesthood leader, with a self-reliance specialist, or in a self-reliance center.

Showing Videos

Media can be a wonderful tool to help group members learn self-reliance principles. However, if you try to show a video using the meetinghouse’s Internet connection, it may pause, buffer, or stop. To avoid this, download the videos ahead of time.

There are several options for downloading and playing videos. The best option depends on the devices you have available, the size of your group, and the video equipment you have.

Option 1: Laptop

  1. On your laptop, click the video link on the Download Materials page.
  2. After the video displays, click Download at the bottom of the video.
  3. Select the file size you want to download. Larger files take longer to download, but the video quality is better.
  4. After you select a file size, the video may download automatically. If it does, look for it in your Downloads folder.
  5. You may have the option of selecting where you want to save the file. We suggest saving it on your desktop so you can find it easily, but you can save it anywhere. You may want to rename the file with a name that will help you remember what the video is about. Once you have renamed the file and specified where you want to save it, click Save.

Option 2: Tablet or Smartphone

If you have an Apple or Android tablet or smartphone, you can download videos using the Gospel Library app.

Android devices:

  1. Navigate to the video you want to download.
  2. Tap the triangle-shaped play button on the menu bar.
  3. Select Download Media from the submenu.
  4. Select the video you want to download from the prompt.
  5. The next time you select the video and click Play Video, it will play as a downloaded file from your device rather than stream over the Internet.

Apple devices:

  1. Navigate to the video you want to download.
  2. Press the download button in the corner of the video thumbnail, and the video will begin downloading to your device.
  3. The next time you watch the video, it will play as a downloaded file from your device rather than stream over the Internet.

Option 3: DVD

  1. On your computer, click the video link on the Download Materials page.
  6. Use DVD-burning software to create a DVD. (Your computer may already have this software; if not, there are many programs available for free online.) Make sure to create a DVD with a menu so that you can navigate to and play the files from your DVD player. (Follow the instructions for your DVD-burning software.)

You might consider finding someone in your ward or stake who can help create DVDs for each group.

How to Download Self-Reliance Materials (PDF Files)
