6 Ways to Bring Christ into a Conversation

Sarah Burchett Church Magazines

Talking to your friends about Christ is easier than you think!

We hear it all the time: “Be a missionary. Share your testimony with your friends.” Sure, we’d all love for our friends to understand how great the gospel of Jesus Christ is, but how do we bring it up?

It can be easier than you think! Here are 6 normal ways you can easily bring Christ into your daily conversations.

Two girls talking

1. Well, you know I’m a Christian …

As you talk with your friends, share how your belief in Christ influences your opinions and actions.

Friend: Why don’t you play sports on Sunday?

You: Well, you know I’m a Christian, so for me, Sundays are a time when I try to remember Christ by …

2. For me, the answer is Christ …

President Ezra Taft Benson taught that every person has “the great questions of the soul” (“Flooding the Earth with the Book of Mormon,” Ensign, Nov. 1988). These are questions like:

  • Is there a God?
  • Why would God allow evil and suffering to occur?
  • Is there life after death?
  • What is the purpose of life?
  • How can I find peace and joy?
  • How can my family be happier and more united?

Your friends have these questions. In their search for answers, they’ll probably ask you. Take the chance to show them that Christ is the answer.

Friend: I just want to be happy. You always seem to be happy. How do you do that?

You: For me, the answer is Christ. Knowing Christ is my Savior helps me be happy because …

3. Do you pray?

If a friend is struggling, ask them if they pray. If they do, encourage them to pray, and explain how praying and Christ help you through hard times. If they don’t, explain what prayer is and how it brings you closer to Christ, and challenge them to try it.

4. Use Christian Words

Don’t be afraid to use words like church, sacrament, God, and others in your conversations. The gospel is part of your life. Own it! Using these words gives your friends an opportunity to ask questions, which gives you the chance to talk about Christ.

Friend: What did you do this weekend?

You: I went to sacrament meeting with my family.

Friend: What’s sacrament meeting?

You: It’s the part of church where we take bread and water to remember Jesus Christ. I really enjoy it because …

5. Share Goodness on Social Media

Follow the Church social media accounts, and share posts that speak to you. Write a brief statement of your beliefs with the post, and use different Church hashtags.

6. Keep Christ Visible

Try setting a picture of Christ as the home screen on your cellphone or computer and displaying it other places people can see it. People may ask you questions or comment about it. You can respond by telling them why it is important to you. If they don’t bring it up, you can. Try saying something like, “Isn’t this a cool picture? I like it because …”

A Way for Everyone

You know your friends best. You know what they struggle with, what their questions are, and what they want from life. No matter their situation, Christ can help them. Take time to ponder how Christ can make their lives better, and pray for opportunities to share with them.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf promises: “My dear friends, today there are more ways than ever for us to open our mouths and share with others the joyful news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. There is a way for everyone … to participate in this great work” (“A Word for the Hesitant Missionary,” Ensign or Liahona, Feb. 2013).
