Behind “I Can Do All Things”

Tanner Townsend

You can overcome any challenge in life with faith, trust in the Lord, and help from family and friends.

The music from the 2015 Mutual theme album was written and performed by youth. This is Tanner’s story about writing his song, “I Can Do All Things.”

I wrote “I Can Do All Things” because in my life I’ve struggled to feel like I really can make a difference. A lot of times I get down on myself and kind of feel depressed, but then every time I look to the Lord, I just feel so much peace; I just know that what I’m doing is right. I realized that if you put your trust in the Lord, you can do anything you want. You just know there’s nothing that’s worth worrying about, because with your trust in Him, you’ll be fine.

If you’re ever feeling down, like no one’s there to help you, or no one gets what you’re going through, just know that the Savior’s gone even lower than you have. He knows exactly where you’ve been; He can reach out to you. If you just look up to Him in those times of need, then you’ll be able to get through anything. And really, the Lord is the only way you can get through the hardest challenges in life.

I realized that if you put your trust in the Lord, you can do anything you want.

Be Yourself

Every person is just as important as another in the sight of God. No matter who you are, no matter what you’ve done or accomplished, He loves you for who you are. So don’t feel pressured to be like everyone else. Just let the Spirit lead you and do what you know is right.

The line “I can do all things, no mountain I can’t climb, there’s nothing I can’t be,” is saying that even with all the rough trials you have in your life, there’s nothing that’s going to stop you; you can always get through things if you just trust in the Lord and put Him first in everything.

You’re Never Alone

The last chorus says, “We can do all things.” I think there are so many people you can turn to in your life who can guide you on the right path. You don’t have to be by yourself.

Just before the chorus, before it builds and gets big, it reminds me of how we feel while we’re making a decision or when we’re having a trial in our life. We feel anxious about it, we feel alone; it’s kind of a low point in life. But as the song builds, it represents the times you feel that power and that it always pays off in the end to do the things the Spirit prompts you to do. If you follow those promptings, you will always feel good in the end.

Throughout the whole song there are vocals in the background that kind of remind me that you’re never alone and that you’re never standing by yourself. There are always people around you to guide you to the right places. Whether it’s the Savior or your family or your friends, there are always people that can help you.
