Behind “Show Them”

Maddie Wilson

Sometimes the best way to be a missionary is to simply show people what we believe.

The music from the 2015 Mutual theme album was written and performed by youth. This is Maddie’s story about writing her song, “Show Them.”

I think one of the most powerful missionary tools that we have is being an example. It’s showing other people who we are and what we believe without saying anything about it.

I hope that people get this message from my song, “Show Them.” It’s about friendship and being an example. People look at us. They look at our beliefs and learn from them. We’re examples to other people whether we want to be or not. That’s why we need to show them who we are and what we believe.

Being an Example

I want everyone to know that I’m a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but I can’t always be preaching about it all the time. That’s why I think just being a good example in my life is so important. I need to set an example.

It’s about being friends with one another. … All of us need to come together and show the world what we believe.

I really like the line from the song that says, “We can show them without saying anything at all.” That’s really what it’s about. We can show them what we believe with the way we dress, the way we talk, and the way we treat other people.

Coming Together

The style of the song is friendly and fun. I think it’s really cool when all the backing vocals come in because it’s about being friends with one another. It’s like a group thing. It’s not just one person. All of us need to come together and show the world what we believe. If we all came together for good, it would be awesome. I think life would be so much easier. Peer pressure wouldn’t exist, and we’d all just have a good time.

Another line in the song says, “In a world that’s always changing it’s hard to find a sturdy place to stand.” That’s so true, especially nowadays. Everything’s changing and so many things in the world tell you what you should do and what you shouldn’t do, but the Church never changes. It’s the sturdy ground that we need to stay on. The Church and the standards we should follow are always there.

Show Them You Care

The song says, “They need to know we care about them first.” My dad tells me that all the time. I’m Laurel class president and my dad says, “If you want people to come to activities and come to church they need to know they have a friend there—someone that’s going to talk to them and someone who’s not going to ignore them and let them stand alone.” That’s another way we can be an example. Just talk to people and just be friends with them. It builds trust and they’ll listen to you. If they know you care about them they’ll be more likely to listen to what you have to say.
