“By Small and Simple Things”
Age 17, Philippines
Textured acrylic paint on canvas
“This painting is about a Laurel who lets her light shine as she shares the gospel with a friend,” 17-year-old Nicole Hermosa of the Philippines says of her entry in the International Art Competition for Youth. “The torch symbolizes the light we have as Latter-day Saint youth. Our Young Women logo is also a torch, which symbolizes the light our Savior gives. So I painted a torch as the light we share with others. By our small acts of service and by sharing the gospel, we can light up other people’s lives.”
“This painting is about a Laurel who lets her light shine as she shares the gospel with a friend. By our small acts of service and by sharing the gospel, we can light up other people’s lives.”
Nicole was inspired by a scripture in the Book of Mormon that says, “By small and simple things are great things brought to pass” (Alma 37: 6). She says that by simply giving service to other people, by sharing and helping them to know and learn about the gospel, we can help them see the light in us. And when others receive and accept the light we share, they too can share that light.
“In my first year of college, I had this wonderful opportunity to share the gospel with two of my classmates and close friends,” Nicole says. “We three had lots of fun times bonding together. One day when we were talking they asked me about the Church. They had noticed I always enjoyed actively participating in Church activities. So, I told them the story of the First Vision, and I testified that the Church is the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. I also testified about the Book of Mormon, how it supports the Bible and contains the fulness of the gospel, and testifies of the Savior. At the end of our discussion, I asked them if they would like to go to church with me.”
Although her friends did not accept Nicole’s invitation to come to church, the three young women are still good friends. And Nicole says she felt a warmth and happiness in just being able to share her testimony of the gospel with her friends. Nicole plans to give both of her friends a copy of the Book of Mormon as a special gift. She also continues to pray that the small and simple discussion with her friends will be of great worth to them someday.
In the future, Nicole hopes to continue sharing her testimony and her talents by becoming an art teacher. “I would love to share my talents and experiences with future artists,” she says. “Artistry has been a great influence in my life, and will continue to be a part of my life. I know that these abilities are a gift from God and must be nourished, cultivated, and shared. I know that we have been given particular talents to help build our Lord’s kingdom.”
