Duty to God

How can I know my Heavenly Father?

Heavenly Father loves us and wants us to draw near to Him. He has given us the opportunity to pray to Him and has promised to hear and answer our prayers. We can also come to know Him as we study the scriptures and the words of latter-day prophets and as we strive to become more like Him by following His will.

What is the purpose of this quorum meeting?

To inspire each young man to strengthen his relationship with Heavenly Father through a pattern of personal prayer and scripture study.

Conduct quorum meeting

A member of the quorum presidency (or an assistant to the bishop in the priests quorum) conducts the quorum meeting. Filling out a quorum meeting agenda beforehand can help.

Begin the learning experience

Invite the young men to watch the video “Fathers and Sons” and to memorize Elder M. Russell Ballard’s three suggestions (see also Elder Ballard’s talk “Fathers and Sons: A Remarkable Relationship”). Invite several young men to share experiences they have had when these three principles have helped them feel closer to their earthly fathers. In what ways can we apply these three suggestions to our relationship with our Heavenly Father?

In advance, invite several young men to briefly teach their fellow quorum members about how personal prayer and scripture study strengthen their relationship with Heavenly Father. Ask them to consider the following scriptures (or others they choose) and to think about personal experiences they could share.

Learn by doing

Counsel together as a quorum about what you can do to help each other establish a pattern of daily prayer and scripture study. Consider the following questions:

  • What goals can we set as a quorum that will help us read the scriptures and pray every day?
  • How can we help each other reach our goals?
  • How can we share what we are learning when we meet in quorum meetings, Mutual, and other activities?

The young men could write their goals in their Duty to God books on page 15 (deacons), 39 (teachers), or 63 (priests).

The young man who is conducting concludes the meeting. He could:

  • Share his commitment to strengthen his relationship with his Heavenly Father through a consistent pattern of prayer and scripture study.
  • Explain how the quorum presidency will lead out in helping quorum members reach their goals.
