What is my purpose as a missionary?

Your purpose as a full-time missionary is to invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end (see Preach My Gospel [2004], 1).

Ideas to Help Me Learn

Consider using one or more of the ideas below as you study chapter 1 of Preach My Gospel.

Learn the purpose of missionary work

Read chapter 1 of Preach My Gospel (“What Is My Purpose as a Missionary?”), and record in the margins the thoughts and feelings you receive and the questions you have. In your own words, write what you learned about the purpose of missionary work. Discuss with your friends what you have learned about the purpose of missionary work.

Understand the doctrine of Christ

Read the section titled “The Gospel of Jesus Christ” on pages 5–6 of Preach My Gospel, and do the scripture study activity on page 6. List what is included in the doctrine of Christ. Watch “Invitation to Be Baptized: German” (2:40) from The District. Use the instructions on pages 19–21 of Preach My Gospel to guide you in preparing a lesson on what you learned about the doctrine of Christ. Teach this lesson to your family.

Bringing souls to Christ

Review the seven statements in “Remember This” on page 11 of Preach My Gospel. Search chapter 1 for sections that increase your understanding of each statement. In your journal, write how each statement will help you become a better missionary.

Receive the blessings of missionary work

Watch the clip from Russell M. Nelson’s talk “Ask the Missionaries! They Can Help You!” (1:28), or study the full talk (15:49). Take notes in the margins of chapter 1 of Preach My Gospel on what he teaches about the purpose of missionary work. What blessings come to others and to you as you participate in missionary work?

See real-life examples

Watch “The Purpose of Missionary Work: Robles Family” (6:59) or “Know Your Purpose” (3:26) from The District, and look for ways these missionaries fulfilled their purpose to invite and help others to come unto to Christ. Role-play with your family or a friend one or more of the ways missionaries invite and help others to come unto Christ.
