How do I learn and teach by the Spirit?

Missionaries fulfill their purpose by teaching people gospel truths by the Spirit and inviting them to make and keep sacred covenants. To teach by the Spirit, we need to live worthily and obtain spiritual knowledge. The Lord has encouraged us to read, seek, search, feast, ponder, and treasure up the truths of His gospel. Your gospel study and teaching will be most effective when the Holy Ghost guides you.

Ideas to Help Me Learn

Consider using one or more of the ideas below as you study chapters 2 and 4 of Preach My Gospel.

Improve my gospel study

Read chapter 2 of Preach My Gospel,How Do I Study Effectively and Prepare to Teach?” (17–27), and talk with family members, friends, or Church leaders about how they study the gospel. Select one of the study suggestions you learn about from these conversations and your reading, and try it in your personal gospel study. Try others each time you study. How does following these suggestions improve your study?

Develop a habit of gospel study

Study the scriptures in the Scripture Study activities found on pages 18–19 of Preach My Gospel. As you read, mark the words and phrases that describe how you should approach your study of the gospel. Ponder the meaning of those words and phrases, and record the impressions you receive. Based on these impressions, develop and follow a plan to consistently study the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Learn about the Holy Ghost

Along with studying the section “The Holy Ghost” in Preach My Gospel (90–91), read Elder David A. Bednar’s talk “Receive the Holy Ghost” (Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2010, 94–97), and make note of additional insights you receive about the gift of the Holy Ghost. Also watch “Teaching about the Holy Ghost and Prayer” (5:00) from The District. What are you doing to ensure that you are guided by the Holy Ghost daily? Talk to a family member or friend about the things you learned about the Holy Ghost.

Recognize and follow promptings

Study “How Do I Recognize and Understand the Spirit?” (Preach My Gospel, 89–102). Discuss with a family member, friend, or Church leader ways you can recognize promptings from the Spirit. Ask others how they gain courage to follow the promptings they receive from the Spirit.

Understand the sacrament and the Holy Ghost

Study Elder Dallin H. Oaks’s talk “Always Have His Spirit” (Ensign, Nov. 1996, 59–61), and take notes on your thoughts and impressions about the sacrament and the Holy Ghost. Develop a lesson outline you can teach to help others learn the importance of this ordinance and the promise that comes with it.

Teach others about the Holy Ghost

Study the scriptures in the activity for personal study found on pages 96 and 97 of Preach My Gospel. With your family, role-play being a missionary and teaching investigators about the roles of the Holy Ghost.
