Apply Doctrinal Mastery Passages

Learning to apply the Lord’s words in the holy scriptures can bless you in many ways. This lesson can help you apply truths in doctrinal mastery passages from the second half of the Book of Mormon.

Momentum

Imagine you pushed or kicked a ball. What could influence how far or how fast the ball rolls?

Momentum is one way to describe the strength or force of a moving object. For example, a bicycle is put into motion as the rider pushes off the ground, and it keeps momentum as the rider maintains balance and continues pedaling. The bicycle gains momentum as the rider increases their effort in pedaling or if the road has a downward incline.

What are some other examples of positive momentum?

We have never needed positive spiritual momentum more than we do now, to counteract the speed with which evil and the darker signs of the times are intensifying. Positive spiritual momentum will keep us moving forward amid the fear and uncertainty created by pandemics, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and armed hostilities. Spiritual momentum can help us withstand the relentless, wicked attacks of the adversary and thwart his efforts to erode our personal spiritual foundation. (Russell M. Imagine that you are the bicyclist, and the pathway represents your life. You might notice how the first part of your path is straight, but then you encounter obstacles and inclines that require greater effort to overcome. Think about the spiritual momentum you need to successfully move through life and the obstacles and challenges that you may experience.

Study the doctrinal mastery key scripture phrases you have been learning, looking for passages that relate to your personal journey. Next to the corresponding numbers on your drawing, write the reference to a doctrinal mastery passage that has or could help you:

Maintain spiritual momentum and progress on a daily basis.
Avoid or overcome an obstacle as you believe and act on the truth the passage teaches.
Draw upon the Savior’s power and rise to achieve your spiritual goals.

For each doctrinal mastery passage you selected and included on your drawing, record your thoughts about at least one of the following ideas:

An experience when you felt the truth and importance of the doctrinal mastery passage.
How you could better apply the doctrine or principle of the passage in your life.
Why you feel this passage will bless you with the Savior’s power and increase your spiritual momentum.
